New local meat supplier, the hedgerow :o)

Hello. Here is a tasty winter warmer, I made enough for three meals eaten over two days. A good opportunity to use up two massive potatoes which had started sprouting. Three veggie sausages, and a Quorn fillet, defrosted in the microwave and cut into pieces, then put in a pan with a splash of oil and spices. Cook for ten minutes. I steamed the potatoes and added them, and half a tin of spaghetti hoops and a tin of red kidney beans. It needed a drop of water, and a spoon of porridge oats. I must say it was bloomin lovely.
I'm getting on with cutting up the vinyl into flowers and leaves for the garden project. Almost got enough now. I need some more buttons, will ask at the Crafty Club, or go to the car boot sale. I was going to use wire to fix it all together but these small cable ties will be just right for the job.

Did you know that in North Lincolnshire gammon steaks grow on trees? No, neither did I till I saw this one today. Amazing isn't it. The things you see in the British countryside.

A notice came in the post today informing me that my car tax is due at the end of the month. Ah well, the refund from my mortgage lender will just cover that then. And I was thinking I might treat myself.

It's been snowing here today, but stopped now. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

  1. That meal looks lovely...Why on earth though would someone put that gammon on a tree, lol.I could have understood more,if it wasnt in a plastic bag, cause maybe they had put it out for foxs ect.Maybe they think that the fox would have use for a zip lock bag when it goes hunting for food,lol....I bet that took a while cutting all those flowers out, still Im sure that the end result will all be worth it.Well the snow we had this morning here had all but gone by 11am so managed to nip up Tesco and use my £2 50p token on 10 packs of value teabags.Which made them free in my eyes!Debi,xx

  2. Looking forward to seeing this latest art work it will be so colorful just what we need to brighten up the winter days althou saying that I did manage an hour in the garden, the hellebores are just coming into flower so I trimmed back lots of the big leaves - I hope it was okay to do so - but now you can see the beautiful flowers. I am so looking forward to seeing what is in my new garden there are several shrubs and roses but until they get a few leaves I don't know what they are. I wonder where the gammon came from I don't suppose we will ever know. Hazel c uk

  3. Have to ask...what did you do with the gammon steak? Could someone have left it for a homeless person, or it got heavy while gathering foraged items so put it down for a while......the stories we could invent around this event!

    1. I left it there. Probably thrown out of a car window, it was there two weeks ago. Maybe a married couple on their way home, arguing about what they were going to have for dinner. The man was driving and he said I'll have the gammon. The vegan woman said, well I'm not cooking it, and threw it out of the window ;o)

  4. I had choppy salad for my dinner today. There’s enough for three or four more meals! I didn’t realize that a (small) cauliflower and broccoli would go so far! What did you do with the meat? I imagine it had to be tossed seeing as how you don’t know how long it sat there. It looks pretty fresh, though.

    1. Ha ha, I think it had already been tossed, from a car window. It is a quiet country lane with no footpath. I saw it two weeks ago, I left it there.

  5. the meat in the bush is weird...soon to be gross...

I wonder if it was stolen off someone's outdoor table/bar b que (as say someone ran in to get the salt etc), by a dog, and then dropped in the bush when maybe some folks came along the trail?

yrs ago I had friends who had two large dogs. One was a rascal and escape artist. One day it snuck off, and ran back about twenty minutes later with a large steak in its mouth. This steak had grill marks on it.

  6. How odd , the gammon tree, must keep a look out for them here in the south. Think of spending the mortgage refund on car tax as treating yourself, if you have not already got money saved for the tax, as you love your car and it enables you to be independant and visit some lovely places.

  7. I have to laugh when I look at the picture of a lovely meal, and then read of the ingredients you used, and think "Wow, how did she do that?" I think I have to work on my frugal cooking skills! Thanks for sharing with us all, Ilona, you brighten my day.

  8. Need to be careful of meat laying around, I live on the cliff tops and we get lots of dog walkers daily. There is obviously a dog hater living somewhere nearby who has been putting poisoned cocktail sausages and bacon down making dogs very ill, such a shame as its a beautiful fenced walk.

  12. I've had a really grotty day today. I went into town to try and find some books from charity shops (no luck); had a bit of a dicky tummy (growling); cricked my ankle (hurting), lost my gloves (got home and found I'd never taken them with me) and generally felt like you-know-what. Then I read your blog showing a piece of gammon in the hedgerow and I'm absolutely in stitches - tears falling down my face, I can't tell you! Thanks for making a ghastly day into a good one.

  13. Just a bit of info about sick pets. Are you aware that if your pet needs medication (tablets etc), instead of getting it from the vet (at monumental cost) you can ask if it's available on prescription? The vet then gives you a prescription which you take to your local Pharmacy to be filled. It's miles cheaper getting tablets this way but most people don't even know this is possible.

    3. Thankyou.I had heard of this once & did ask a my vets. They said there was a charge for the prescription but it would still be a lot cheaper to do this.I buy denmarin online as it's cheaper by loads-but I don't need a prescreption for that x

  14. You need to send your readers over here in the States some clippings of that gammon steak tree so we can grow some.

I just finished a lunch made entirely of leftovers (roast beef, various veggies, and the heel end of a loaf of bread). Ugly to start with but beautiful and delicious when it all came together!

  15. FLIS - yes, a human pharmacy. Often medication/tablets for animals are just a lower dose of what would be prescribed for humans so it's worth asking. Some vets might get a bit sniffy but just explain that you're having to economise - I've never had an issue. If you do, change vets.
