Ethical shopping

I found this on my twittttter feed this morning, Hugh's War on Waste has re tweeted it. This advert has been banned from TV for being too political, but it can be found on yooootoooob. Hugh says concern for the planet isn't political, it's ethical. He's right. Watch it and see what you think. I reckon it should be blitzed all over the internet. A clever bit of marketing from Iceland I reckon, although I very rarely shop there.

Talking of palm oil, I was dead chuffed to find these two jars on Aldi shelves. These butters are exactly what they say, 100% nuts, no added ingredients, and they taste very nice. I still make my own peanut butter by the way, I just wanted to try these.

Now all I've got to do is find some cream crackers with no palm oil. I can see me reading a lot of labels from now on, thank goodness there is no palm oil in fruit, veg, and fresh salads.  Let me know what items you have changed to, to avoid palm oil?   ilona

  2. I would love that little cutie in my bedroom!!.Seriously though,I didnt realise that this was a problem..I hadnt heard of this before.Maybe, ive had my head up my backside and not really noticed just what is going on for these poor animals.I do know that a friend of a friend of ours, goes on very expensive trips to see them and also gives to charities for them...but Ive never thought to ask why??.Maybe I should have.I love the advert, although like you I dont ever use Iceland but I can see that it is ethical...and Not political. Why on earth should it be banned??.It will make me check now on what I buy if it contains palm oil...although I cant think of anything off hand....but I am going to check in my pantry anyway.Maybe soaps and stuff like that??.I will now not buy anything that has it in the contents.Anything to help these poor beautiful animals.Thank you for bringing it to my attention...I really didnt know.xx

    1. Palm oil is everywhere, you have to search for products that don't have any in.

  3. I've been buying Meridian Peanut butter for years as it is just 100% nuts and no salt sugar or oil. As you say, it's easy to avoid palm oil if you don't buy over processed food.

  5. You're right. Palm oil is everywhere from foods to household products to cosmetics. It's hard to avoid - but it can be done!

  6. Forgot to say that when I first watched a clip of the deforestation many years ago and saw the cruelty inflicted on the inhabitants it really sickened me. I sponsor an orangutan via WWF - not sure if it helps but I still do it!

  7. Yes, Ilona, i’ve been sharing the advert with everyone I know. Hopefully, the fact that it has been banned, will result it it being shared with a wider audience of people whi actually care. Well done, Iceland.

  8. I didn't realise this had been banned :-(

Everything that should be available to allow us to make our minds up about things in a logical and sensible way seems to be censored to fit a different agenda. Palm oil is in so many things at the moment, I love that Iceland is quickly phasing it out of all their own brand products, it will mean at least one shop that we can use without having to read all the small print on everything we buy if it does come to fruition.

  10. You are right Ilona. Palm oil is everywhere. I look on labels and if they contain Palm oil I don't buy them. It is hard trying to find things that are free from it. The reason they use it is because it makes things cheap, but it is not good for our bodies. Good for Iceland and I hope the advert is put back on the tv. Im not on twitter so thank you for your message.x

  11. That video is going to get more views than if it had not been taken down! The DP and I have spent quite a while today in a supermarket going through body moisturisers to find one without palm oil. Amazing how much stuff has it in! Got Nivea Lotion for dry skin. No palm oil, but almost every other one had it in.

  13. Im sitting here at my kitchen table with a few things that Ive found to have it in and I wont be buying again.I do the majority of my shopping in Aldi.Digestive biscuits, mince pies, packs of 5 chocolate bars, cream crackers,Bisto gravy..although I buy the value one from Tesco...this info is on the Bisto tin I empty my gravy in.Dumping mix has something called Palm fat in it?.I presume this is the same thing?.And I not yet looked in the bathroom!.Ive been told that all Aldi bathroom stuff is done cruelty free and not tested on animals.I will check that stuff later on.Im glad that I have seen this and I will be really checking my shopping from now on.No wonder they put the ingredients in such small print!xx

  15. Thank you , Ilona, I might never have seen this otherwise. Wrong to ban it. It's something we need to be aware of and I'll be reading labels much more carefully from now on.

  18. I’m vegan so palm oil is in many of the foods I eat and it’s an important part of the lives of many farmers. I think it’s ok if it’s ethically made. Correct me if I’m wrong please .

  19. I heard that palm oil wasnt good but I just thought it was fattening.Even though Ive been vegetarian 40 years I didnt know about the animal cruelty involved. Thanks for informing us Ilona x

  20. I've done considerable research into this and not all palm oil is bad. You need to look out for Sustainable palm oil, not unsustainable. However of course it's not always listed on products as such. If you Google RSPO palm oil you'll get lots of info. You can also download a product list from actforwildlife.org.uk which lists lots of foods that use sustainable palm oil. It also gives you the information how the planting of it uses far less land than for coconut oil etc. Using certified sustainable palm oil is protecting orangutan's habitats.

  21. Dear Ilona
Thank you for posting this video - it perfectly explains how damaging palm oil deforestation is destroying everything in it's path.
Thank goodness for Iceland banning all palm oil in their food products - at last a retailer who puts ethical trading before profit.
It's also 50% saturated fat for heavens sake - why would anyone want all that cholesterol boosting fat in their body?
I read labels right, left and centre to avoid it!

  23. Ive known about the palm oil fiasco for sometime but it seems our governments, who ever is in, does very little about it 're banning of products and retricting its usage. We also have a palm oil problem on our Norfolk beaches at the moment, it comes ashore looking like a rock dogs love the taste and it can kill them...so watch out for it.
