Minor adjustment needed

I might be able to wear shorts next week when I am out and about. You never know, there may be a bit more sun coming along after this rain which is falling at the moment, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some good weather. The blue baggy shorts are getting a tad scruffy now, the stains won't wash out of them so I think they will be relegated to garden and pottering around use.

I bought a pair of grey shorts back in April for £2 from the Hospice Charity Shop. How do I remember that? Because it says so on my post for Friday 6th of April, ha ha. Anyway, the shorts were too big so I put some darts into the waistband and moved the hook and eye fastener a bit further along so now they fit to my 28inch waist.

However, the side pockets were too small to fit a map into so another minor adjustment was needed. As I didn't have any suitable spare grey fabric I thought black would be a good choice. Then I had second thoughts. Why settle for dull and boring grey and black, I wear black all the time. Why not jazz them up a bit with some colour. I removed the original pockets and made some new and bigger ones from a piece of fabric I got from the Scrapstore. The flaps have velcro fastening. Wadya think? Cool eh.

And here is our model with her nobbly knees, posing in the kitchen of Tightwad Towers. She has teamed the shorts up with a pale grey sweatshirt embellished with two white fluffy kitties surrounded with pink flowers, which she found in the loft, left behind by the previous owners of the house.

I think you will agree that this exclusive outfit would not look out of place on the catwalk amongst some of Victoria Beckham's exclusive designs. I am quite willing to negotiate a deal with her should she wish to contact me. We could make a lot of money together, ha ha.

  1. love those shorts! I think you are a terrific seamstress!
The stock taking was great idea but I hope you need to buy more pens before you die; the pens tend to dry up and I DO hope YOU last longer than them!!!

  2. I used to make a lot of my clothes when I was younger so I learnt the skills. Sewing was my favourite lesson at school. I don't make from scratch now because I can buy clothes cheaply from car boot sales and charity shops, and adjust them to my liking.

  4. They look super now Ilona. I learned to sew when I was about six years old on my Ma's old Singer, a skill that I have used a great deal.

  9. Ilona, I love how you fussy-cut the flowers to center on the pockets. When I saw the first photo, I thought you had placed them on the back of the shorts which would have made them look like bullseyes! You did good girl!

    1. So did I! I think she should sew another one in the middle of a sweat shirt so she would be florally truly co-ordinated.

  11. My husband was able to buy some great shorts last year with numerous pockets excellent for travelling - but they never make womens shorts like that. Well done!

  12. lovley job better than new. You are teaching me so much about being thrifty.
Yesterday I bought a white flat double bed sheet in perfect condition for £2.00.
And a pink GAP fleecy top with hood and front muff type pocket for £2.50.
Hope you think I did well. All from the charity shop.

  13. I absolutely love the pockets you fashioned! I really want cargo shorts/pants. That is what we call the pants/shorts with those huge pockets. I could leave my purse at home. I only wear knit pants, EVER, so pockets won't work on those. Everyone will ask about and want pants like yours. You took guy shorts and made them so girly.
