Rocky Super Dog

I made this video today of Rocky swimming. The big pond is a few minutes drive from where we live. You might want to turn the volume down a bit as I have picked up a lot of wind noise, not sure why as it wasn't that windy. He swan almost all the way round the pond, he loves it. I keep him on a long leash because he would be off into the middle, and it is very deep. I can't swim to go and save him.

  2. Dogs don't often swim to that extent by choice Ilona. However they do swim and keep swimming because they think they're unable to get out, not because the shore isn't easily accessible but because ssomething in their dog brain makes them think that they've still to keep swimming. They can look as if they're thoroughly enjoying it when in fact they can be floundering. They'll swim to the point of exhaustion. I've just read about this recently - I'll see if I can find the link again.

  4. Seems as if you've got a marathon swimmer there. Loved seeing him shake and then rolling up in the grass, and wagging his tail in pure enjoyment.

  5. Aw thats made my day. What a happy little fella he is in water, its funny how they don't need to be taught how to swim. Good idea with the rope, I have no idea how you managed all that and keep filming but well done - and what a beautiful area!

  6. I really enjoyed watching Rocky having his swim. It was made more pleasurable because you had been so careful by putting him on a rope. My heart would have been in my mouth otherwise!
Loved his face when he came out and had a good roll.

  7. I had to call my husband over to watch this. We both laughed and think Rocky is the cutest dog ever! We both love dogs. Thanks for this video. Rocky sure loves the water.

  8. To think that Rocky never used to be walked and now he has such a good tme with you. I don't agree with Anonymous - one of my dogs rushes into the sea every day for her swim and comes out and goes in again several times. She clearly loves it as much as Rocky. Such good exercise for dogs. Rocky is lucky to have you.

  10. I loved watching Rocky swimming, one of my past girls would do exactly the same ... funnily enough she looked like a smaller version of the lovely boy! Thank you for making me smile and for reminding me of happy times ... Barbara x

  11. Oh just to add about the floundering thing someone has posted ... never read of such a thing and my dog certainly never swam to the point of exhaustion? My Inty would actively wade in to swim, paddle along until she had had enough and then simply turn into the shore herself and run out. Like Ilona and Rocky, I kept her on a long leash ... just in case. An interesting theory and I'll look it up, but it doesn't apply to all dogs for sure :)
