Wish I'd been born a boy..........

........because boys jobs seem far more interesting than girls jobs. I could have been driving big machines like this one. What a beast, all that power.
A good view from the cab.
I would have that crop harvested in no time. Three tractors and trailers were on standby waiting at the bottom end of the field for the monster to come and discharge it's load and fill them up. Isn't it a beauty, and on a 69 plate it's almost brand new. I bet that cost a fair few bob.
I was a bit late setting off for my walk again, due to faffing. The last 20 minutes were spend carefully picking my way along the edge of a field in the dark. The walking pole was very handy to assist balance. Despite being a perfectly nice afternoon when I set out, a woolly hat and hood was needed for the last half an hour. It was a cold wind.
Nothing better than a bowl of hot veggie stew with pasta when I got back. Made yesterday and heated in the microwave. One more portion left for tomorrow.
Now I am chilling with a glass of wine. It's been a good day.

Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. I've not seen a gizmo like that before. What was the crop they were harvesting?

    1. I didn't recognise the leaves, don't think they were sugar beet. Possibly swedes, for animal feed.

  3. That veggie stew does look very warming. Do you shave a little parmesan over it?
What was being harvested by the monster machine?

    1. I don't have any parmesan, I sometimes grate a bit of cheddar on it.
I think the harvest was swedes. I could see big root balls through the mesh basket.

  4. If the "good ole boys" did not control the world, you could have operated that, even being a girl! Thankfully, the world is getting better!

    1. I think if girls were considering a career in farming these days it would be easier.

    1. Fascinating how it scooped the roots up and spat the leaves out of the side, to be ploughed back in.

  6. Hi Ilona,
Enjoyed catching up on your blog.

I thought of you a few nights ago. It was bitterly cold here. I have animals outside & have a "snugglesafe". It's a hard rubber disc filled with a gel & after microwaving you pop it in a fleece cover. It keeps Boris's hutch so warm & stays warm for hours (i have insulated it too)

I think they do human versions, but its cheap heat for cold nights if your sitting x

    1. Our local cat rescue has some of those microwaveable discs. Sue puts them in the cat beds each night. They are really good.

  7. The only problem with the sugar beet harvest is the mud left on the road from the harvester, the tractors and the huge trucks that come and pick up the beet. My car is disgusting and no point cleaning it as the harvest is still trying to get finished although it's too wet now for them to get on the fields

    1. Yes, the mud is awful. We get people moaning about it around here. When the cutting machines and lorries appear on the turf fields we know we are going to get mud all over our cars.

  8. Super photos and so good you got some interesting photos.
Your dinner looks so warm and inviting.
I was warming up something in the microwave last might and I had left a spoon in the dish and of course it started to spark I was so cross with myself, another job for my Carol to get a new one.

    1. I did that trick. I left a spoon in a mug when I was making coffee. Realised very quickly and stopped it before it did any damage.

  9. I watch some 0f the modern day machinery used on farms and building sites and they are truly amazing. I looked in the cab of one of the huge combines parked up last year and they have all mod cons inside.

  10. One of my wishlist items is a workshop with lathes, drills, jigsaws etc, but my greatest wish is to have a router!! The shapes and designs you can do with one of those!! For outdoor fun I am currently saving for a metal detector! Not a very girly list for me either!

    1. I can help you with the metal detector. I have never owned one, but I worked for Crawfords Metal Detectors at Scunthorpe. Give Craig Allison a ring and tell him what you want, how much you want to spend, and where you are going to use it, fields, beach, etc. Tell him I sent you, ask for mates rates. 01724 845608. He is the expert.

    2. Thank you very much Ilona, that's very kind. That's a very comprehensive website he's got there. Have bookmarked it and will peruse to decide on a model. Hopefully this post won't bring you any more "spy" notifications! I sent my friend a pic of a sewing pattern I'd found in a charity shop (pre-lockdown), next thing he's getting texts from ebay asking if he's still interested in sewing patterns!!!

  11. Ah but you did play with boy's toys as a lorry driver! Very few women did or even do now.

    1. Yes, I did indeed. I used to play with my brothers Meccano construction set, rather than the one baby doll I had for Christmas. I didn't realise it at the time that I was going to work on construction sites and quarries, hauling heavy machinery about.
