Question and answer

British Gas have been pestering me to book an appointment for an engineer to come and fit smart meters. I ignore them. They want me to change to direct debit. I ignore them.

A question from a reader of This is Money

We have been told by Eon that our electric meter needs replacing and it is a 'legal obligation' to do so.

Answer from Dean Dunham, Legal Rights Lawyer.

Smart meters are not compulsory. You are perfectly within your legal rights to refuse your provider's offer or insistence to install one.

So there you are. Just say no.

Catch ya later. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. Greetings from Australia, I have has the same smart meter problem from my electricity supplier here, have refused said smart meter for years, earlier this year got letter from electricity company saying a new fee of $145. Aussie dollars would be added to my quarterly bill to cover the cost of sending a human to do their job, turns out there are still plenty of people with the old style meter, customer backlash and lots of complaints to local papers has seen the new fee scrapped and our old meter is staying, mobile and internet reception is very patchy where I live so I have no confidence that a smart meter can accurately bill me for power consumption. Love your soft pots and hedgehog pics, cheers from Elizabeth

    1. That's the way to do it! People don't realise the power they hold just by saying 'No'.

  2. We had a smart meter fitted about 6 months ago after years of saying we didnt want one.To be honest,it hasnt been a problem in any way....iinfact the device that comes with it,is use full cause it shows where every penny is being used.Because I have solar panels....which were fitted free about 12 years ago...I have discovered that when I put my washing machine on,it doesnt cost anything.Phone chargers, laptop chargers costing nothing.Showers are the only thing to seem to move it up a gear! The microwave uses very little too.So it was interesting for me to see just where the bills can mount up.We are using very little more than our standing charge each day.Of course, this wont work for people who dont have solar panels...but it is interesting to see just what devices are costing more than others.xx

  5. You do right, Ilona. We have been ignoring the push for a smart meter for years and will continue to do so. All anyone needs to do is just say no.

  6. My husband wrote to Scottish power to tell them that if they called again regarding a smart meter he would instigate a case of harassment. We’ve not been contacted again.
