Oooooh, look at the muck in here :o)

I've been doing a bit of spring cleaning today, oh how flippin boring that was. I can't find any enthusiasm for these mundane tasks. I believe that some people actually like housework, goodness knows why. You sweep, dust, polish, vacume, wipe, and wash down, and bugger me, five years later it's all dirty again. I noticed that my front door and front porch was looking a bit shabby so I suppose it needed doing, after all, you never know who is going to step over your threshold.

So it was down with the net curtain, and into a sink full of hot soapy water it went. You should have seen the muck come out of it, I'm surprised that I managed to restore it to almost white again, thanks to a splash of bleach.  The home made shoe rack in the corner came out, boots and shoes were removed and it was wiped down with a wet cloth. All the nicknacks hanging on the wall were taken down. It took seven bowls of hot soapy water to wipe down the walls on two sides, the front door, and the glass at the front. I got fed up then and got the Dyson out to clean the carpet, and put everything back.

Well at least it now looks respectable for when people visit. You never know, the Queen might pop in to see me. Oh, I forgot, I am the Queen, ha ha.

My car insurance came up for renewal last week, pleased to say the cost is much lower than last year. That's because I have had a claim free couple of years, so it has gone back to what it was before I claimed. I also got it down a bit more by reducing my annual mileage, from 8,000 to 6,000. They told me that figure is not set in stone, and as long as I get it somewhere near I'll be alright. I don't seem to be doing many miles at the moment, I limit my short journeys and save up the miles for the longer trips.

My flippin knees are aching, I've got a big ginger cat sprawled right across them. Bugsy is going to have to move in a minute. My dinner tonight was steamed potatoes and cauliflower, with half a microwaved cauliflower cheese ready meal, with black eyed beans and garlic cream cheese added to it. Luverly jubberly.
Toodle pip.

  1. There must be something in the air,I mopped all the downstairs floors today. What's the point? We have a log fire so they will all be covered in soot particles again.

  2. Oh! cleaning! just what a HOUSE FAIRY does best.
I do a little every day.
    To days jobs...
Dance with Dyson, shine your sinks (kitchen and bathroom). With 4 adults here the sinks needs a wash every day!
Wash bedding and put on line. 2nd clothes wash went on clothes horse's. No tumble drier used.
Pet care. Washed dog bowls and took Chip for a walk.
This afternoon cooked a roast pork dinner for the family and washed up AGAIN.

I had not thought to put bleach in with the net curtain wash. I will try that to get them whiter. I wash mine with Ariel gel in the sink.
I often think the neighbours have a bit whiter nets than mine.

Glad to here your car insurance has come down a bit. Have you been round the comparison sites? you never know?

Just waiting to watch Mr Selfridge on ITV 1 at 9pm.

    Good night House fairy.

  3. We've had a couple of unseasonably warm 70 degree days here in Virginia, USA. This type of weather makes me think of "spring cleaning". Then I realize, gee, you better get those Christmas boxes put up in the attic first!

  4. So glad you were able to get some spring cleaning done today, and everything is all ready for "The Queen's" visit...hahhaha.
Be careful with bleach on your net curtains, it weakens the fibres....try OxyWash instead.

  5. I had a bit of a spring clean when I discovered the little hook I was trying to hang something on was actually a thick piece of cobweb.

  6. Not sure where I saw it but to clean net curtains take them down, fold them, put them in a washing up bowl with wash powder and water. tread on them with your feet whilst watching the TV. as they are folded they will be ok. change the water give a bit more of a tread. still folded, roll them in a towel, to squeeze out water.

Hang back up, they will dry quickly. and no creased bits

I don't know where I saw that but I have done it a few times. works a treat.

  9. I hate to clean! I do it because I also hate a dirty house, but I really don't enjoy cleaning the house. I don't mind doing laundry (I know - weird, huh?) and I love to cook but I hate the dusting and vacuuming and cleaning the shower (ugh!). I have a friend who loves to clean. What? I can't believe that anyone actually loves to clean. Oh well, we're all different. Sounds like you really did a thorough job on your front porch. Good for you!

  11. Yes, where does all the muck come from? How do curtains get so dirty, nobody walks on them? How do surfaces get so dusty when there's no coal fire?

And if you do find someone who likes housework, send them to see me, I'll keep them happy for a long time.

  13. Hi illona, loving your blog.

Please don't use bleach on your nets, they will rip so easily after, especially if they get the sun on them! Try using either a soak in lemon juice or strident (own store brands are fine too), works great. Strident is also great for getting tea and coffee stains out.

  14. Like you we loathe housework (it just seems never-ending). Unfortunately one family member wears her fur coat all the time (that's Madame the Cat) and one family member is allergic to said fur coat (that's me). So my partner and I do a clean every Sunday morning (or maybe that's every fortnight??) while Madame supervise the process.

  15. Oh Oh, lazy me, I was at work Saturday night, I got up just after noon, drank copious amounts of tea while daughter vacuumed, dusted, polished and ironed. I did feed the washing machine and cooked dinner. I played with my fabric and cut out 6 inch squares and got 6 blocks sewn and cut for a disappearing 9 patch quilt top, just 14 more to do. Went to work for 8:00 and came home early, a bit more sewing before I go to bed I think.

  17. I renewed my car insurance in December and it was about half the cost of last years insurance. I don't know why it was so much cheaper this year as i have had no claims of any sort for about 13 years.
I must admit though that spending a couple of hours on various comparison websites really paid off.
    Have a fabulous day!

  18. I hate cleaning too, and my most thorough cleans usually come about because of some kind of accident. Like the time when my son was ill and he had medicine that had to be shaken. I shook the bottle over the open cutlery drawer one time when the top hadn't been put on properly from the time before. This resulted in me having to take everything out and wash most of the cutlery, the inside of the drawer, the drawer front and the floor!
Still, that was about 15 years ago and I don't think I've cleaned it out since!
