So, where to next. I make it up as I go along. If I want to see the sea I just have to go straight down to the Gower Peninsula and The Mumbles. So that's what I did. I wanted to avoid Swansea so I headed down towards Llanelli to pick up the A484 across the water, then look for the signs. Years ago I used to deliver pickled onions from a factory in Derby to the factory in Llanelli where they packed them into jars. Ha, the things I remember.
I was looking for signage to the Gower, I didn't see any for ages, then I did. Round and round the houses I went. It's very difficult when you are the driver and the navigator. Decisions tend to be in the last seconds of seeing a sign. No, I don't want a sat nav, or a smart phone. I will use my brain to work things out for myself.
Hooooray, I found my way to The Mumbles, now to find a place to park. All of the car park signs are like this. Note the statement at the bottom in red. That's a polite way of saying. . . . IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY, BUZZ OFF. 😎😝😂
There was a side road leading to a housing estate, mainly blocks of flats. That will do nicely. I parked directly behind another car, so as not to stand out like a sore thumb. Safety in numbers. I set off walking along the Promenade. Nice splash of colour there.
The tide was mainly out, with big pools of water laid about on the beach. I stopped for a few minutes to watch the small children stomping about in their wellies, with their teachers supervising. It made me smile. This is what kids should be doing, out in the open air. The weather was playing ball today. After the rain came the sunshine. The walk along the Promenade filled me with joy. There is a big outdoor terrace seating area in front of this restaurant. The flower beds were full to bursting with colour.
There is a lot of building work going on to improve the surface and install very modern stainless steel barriers. A lot of it is already done. They are working their way towards the pier area. The railings are in the style of a boat, they remind me of The Titanic. I've never seen a lifeboat station on stilts out in the water before.
The big wheel is not turning at the moment. But I did see it moving later on as I walked back. When I got to this point I decided to turn around and walk back into the town centre. My Mumbles visit didn't end here. Come back for the next installment.
It's sunny today, Wednesday. Coffee Club this morning, now I have work to do in the garden.
Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip. ilona
Tenby lifeboat station is on a wooden platform. Sometimes in water, depending on the tide. ( was it Hazlewoods pickles) ?
ReplyDeleteYes it was. I worked for British Road Services who had the contract for Hazlewoods Foods. They made the pickled onions at Derby and we delivered them in Bulk to Llanelli. They then packed them in jars and labelled them up. I had a six wheeled rigid DAF truck. Sleeper cab, very nice it was as well.
DeleteCatherine Zita Jones hails from the Mumbles. When my son lived in Swansea he used to run to the Mumbles and back again. Some swish shops there now I think. I have memories of being at the Mumbles for about 8 a.m. in the morning after dropping middle daughter off to her Theatre/Dance class nearby. They were off to a rehearsal for a musical they took part in (Joseph etc). It was lovely walking along the sea front seeing all the shops gradually opening and getting busy.
