Make yourself a cuppa and take a break from whatever you are doing. It's been raining here this morning on this Bank Holiday Sunday, but Owain the weather man says's it's going to brighten up.

Carbis Bay to Hayle

Another day in Cornwall. I'm getting mixed up with the order of things now as I uploaded and edited some of the photo's while I was there. On this day I walked in the opposite direction to St Ives, along the coastal path. Again the footpath was high up so lovely views over the bay.
Sometimes the views were obliterated by the tall hedges on both sides. The path was narrow with a steep drop on one side, and very up and down so progress was slow.

At last the views appeared again to be enjoyed. Looking down at the Hayle estuary.

The path eventually turns into a tarmac road as you go around the water through Lelant. Some nice gardens to look at.

I had a bimble through Hayle,

And out the other side along this long road next to the waters edge. It's doesn't look very interesting from the long shot, but it's a quiet road which comes to a dead end so only a few cars use it, and a separate footpath is hidden behind the bushes.

There are lots of greenery and flowers to admire, and fish ponds with quiet places to sit for a while.

At the end of that road I did a u turn over a pedestrian bridge and walked back into Hayle along the road. The ornate top of this building caught my eye.

Four pretty houses adds a splash of colour. I wonder if they got together and agreed which colours they were going to use before they started the job. Or perhaps one person did their house and the others decided to follow suit.

Just along from the houses was this beautiful church. I do like the different coloured stone used.

Then it was time to head back. I retraced my steps for a while through Hayle, then followed the paths and roads on the map towards St Erth, and through country lanes back to Carbis Bay. Today I walked 12 miles.

A bit of allsorts on this walk, coast, villages, town, and country roads, which is what I like. More to follow. Toodle pip.  ilona

Art in St Ives.

I'll slot these few pictures in here as they are relevant to the previous post. St Ives is an arty place, which was one of the reasons that prompted me to go there. The Tate Gallery had little to interest me, I like art which has some degree of skill in the making of it. I liked this picture of the Owl and the Pussycat, painted on hinged boards. It was fastened to the wall so I don't know what it looks like with the doors closed.
Then I found a gallery where I liked most of the work on display. It was a little bit late in the day and the ladies were preparing to shut up shop and go home. Luckily they did not hurry me and I was able to have a few minutes looking around. The work was by a group of artists who show their art in different places, a bit like a touring exhibition.

I got chatting to Beverley, she makes textile art out of rubbish, so I immediately felt a rapport with her. It was so nice to find someone with similar tastes in art.

I liked this painting of St Michael's Mount. It's in a folk art style which I love.

This is one of Beverley's creations, isn't it fabulous. The box frame is an old one she has had for ages, and decided to do something with it, so she painted it and stuffed it with all kinds or arty and crafty miniatures, using up lots of bits and pieces. That's a really good idea.

This dress took a few years to make, not one of Beverley's. It has been blitzed with machine and hand embroidery. Stunningly beautiful.

This is Beverley's work. An old canvas painted over, with bits and pieces painted and stuck on. I like the use of bold colours.

A random application of paint and small shapes arranged in an interesting design.

I hope this has been of interest to all you arty people out there. More about walking in Cornwall in the next post. Toodle pip.   ilona

Bimbling around St Ives

Yes, I've been away for my Birthday. I took a trip down to the south west of England, it's 390 miles to St Ives in Cornwall from North Lincolnshire. I had a nice B & B. Booked in advance found on the internet. I look at the booking agencies first to get the information I need, then contact the owner direct when I have found one that I fancy that can accommodate me for the dates I need. It wasn't cheap but prices down in the south west are generally a bit more expensive than the midlands and north. It was my birthday treat, and this is why I live a frugal life so I have money to afford holidays and days out.
This is not my B & B, ha ha, but an example of the many houses, apartments, and hotels that overlook Carbis Bay where I stayed. A lot of them are holiday lets.
On the first day I went a walk to St Ives. Heading down the hill, over the railway line, past the station to join the South West Coastal Path.

Must have a beach walk and a selfie. A bit windy today, but dry and warm.

The place has a look of tropical gardens. This rock garden looks newly laid and planted.

There are eateries overlooking the beach.

Further along the path as it starts climbing, I look back at the views.

A little bit of tranquility in the centre of St Ives.

There were plenty of people about, browsing shops and sitting in cafe's.

This was a cute little sheltered courtyard with seating in the middle, and gift shops to browse. When visiting places I always take my food and drink with me.

I sat on a bench and watched the surfers playing in the waves.

The Tate Gallery beckoned me so I paid the £6.50 entrance fee. Have to say that there wasn't much to rave about. A few interesting modern art paintings, but most of it just went right over my head. The building itself is unusual and interesting, and has a rather grand entrance, but the exhibits didn't inspire me. I went to another art gallery and found some art that was just my thing. Textile art with lots of colour. The lady who had made it was there so I had a lovely chat with her. I'll do another post with pictures.

If you want golden sands and big beaches, Cornwall is the place. In the time I was there, I struggled to find any litter anywhere. It seems to me that leaving rubbish lying around is not tolerated.

On the way up to St Ives Head and the Lookout Station, I sat down on the grass and took in the wonderful sea views. A bobbing head on the rocks below caught my attention. Someone sketching. The zoom on the camera is pretty good.

I love to see the sea splashing over the rocks.

Back down into St Ives again and I wandered around the waters edge.

This boat was unloading it's catch.

Crab nets stacked up on the pier.

Pleasure boats parked up.

Time to walk back to Carbis Bay. I took the road rather than the path, it's a bit higher up.

7 miles walked today. That is a guestimate, I was on my feet all day, except for ten minutes sitting here and there. I can't be doing with being idle for any length of time. I like to keep moving to see more places.

More Cornwall posts coming up.  Toodle pip.  ilona

Lovely views in Tintagel

A quickie video I made yesterday in Tintagel. It's a lovely place, but if you need a pee it will cost you 50p at the public conveniences. What a rip off. I was lucky, I found one at the visitors centre which was having it's entrance converted with new barriers. It was still 20p, slot in the door type. I let two other people in at the same time as I went in.

It's been a busy week

Good morning. I'm back. What! Where have you been I hear you say! Yes, I went on holiday for my birthday treat. I've been to Cornwall. It's a few years since I was last down there, so I thought another visit to places I haven't seen before, was in order. I stayed at Carbis Bay, visited St Ives, Penzance, Portreath, Hayle, Padstow, and Tintagel. I walk a lot, of course, some of it along the South West Coastal Path, and I visited an animal sanctuary on the way back. Lots of photo's to show, and there are still some more Trucking Life videos ready to publish, and more to make. So don't go away, plenty of stuff in the pipeline. See you soon. Toodle pip.. ilona

Life After Money, a change for the better.

I have just been talking to someone who is still working at his own business, his wife works in it as well, and he is past 70 years old. Although their business isn't going too well at the moment, he can't see a life beyond working because he says everything is expensive and he needs to keep working to fund their living. He likes golf, and power lifting at the gym, but can't see how he can afford that on a pension.

I tried to give him some hope, but to no avail, he said what will I do if I don't work. I think there are a lot of people who don't understand the concept of living within your means. He said if I go to the pub I can easily spend £80 while out drinking with mates. It's the social aspect of it which he wants to carry on with.

Everyone has to find their own way about what is important to them. Not to look for alternatives means you wear yourself into the ground, just trying to keep up. It will take more than a short conversation with me for him to find the answers he needs, but if he doesn't take a step back he will run out of time. It's a heavy burden to carry around with you when you feel you have to keep working. I guess I will have to keep on plugging the message, that there is Life After Money.

Walking with James Piekos.

James Piekos, the breakfast show presenter from Radio Humberside is doing a 100 mile walk to raise money for Children in Need. I went to meet the posse and walk a few miles with them. I drove to Cottingham and parked my car there, which was where he was going to finish the day. Then I set off walking towards him.
I found them at the Morrisons roundabout at Beverley. As I joined the group James went striding off, they were a bit behind schedule so he was trying to make up some time. I thought I was a fast walker, but James has endless energy. Trying to take a pic while fast walking is a bit tricky.
He's got nice legs, ha ha.

Time for a short stop to discuss things with the people in the radio car.

Managed to pin him down for a minute.

Here we are, arrived at Cottingham Civic Hall. Someone was giving out free ice lollies, and there was a musical welcome.

James rattling his bucket, and getting the band to play for him.

The walk is over five days, covering East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. That's another eight miles to add to my total.  Toodle pip.  ilona
