A coffee and a moan.

Good evening. This video took long enough to upload. I must try and get them below ten minutes. Maybe I should write a script and read from that.
I didn't go out today, the weather was horrible. Drizzly, cold, and windy. Let's hope it is better tomorrow.
Now going to watch my Sunday night viewing on yooootooob, and cuddle Mayze.
Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. Totally understand and agree with you about digital, so frustrating isn't it. Vanlife appeals to me too. I wonder if the need to upgrade the phone just applies if using the Internet on it,maybe texts and calls will still be OK. Nick

    1. Yes, frustrating. I always say we should move forward in life, but what if we are going in the wrong direction. I will sort the phone out later. It works for now.

  2. Hi Ilona, please don't let the sales people convince you to get another mobile phone plan or unnecessarily spend money on another handset. If all you want is calls and texts you can continue to do this using 2G at least until around 2033! Yes, 3G is being switched off, but that will not affect you with just calls and texts. If you go in asking them to 'sort you out' they'll fleece you of your money to help them hit their sales targets! I agreed with you on digital, fed up with it and I'm in my early 40's.

    1. Thank you. No one can sell me something I don't want and don't need.

    2. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/coverage-and-speeds/3g-switch-off/

This link to offcom can shed some light on the plans for 3G etc. I would recommend 1p mobile (uses EE network) just thought I'd suggest it, if Tesco are difficult. https://www.1pmobile.com/siminfo?simtype=SBCT500

    3. Thank you Anon.

Customers using the EE, Vodafone and O2 networks with an older device will still be able to make calls and send text messages after 3G switch-off. These services can use the 2G network, which isn’t being switched off yet.

Each mobile provider is setting its own timetable for its 3G network switch-off. These timings might change and you should check your mobile provider’s website for the latest update:

Vodafone completed its switch-off in early 2024.
EE completed its switch-off in early 2024..
Three expects to switch-off by the end of 2024.
      O2 is planning to switch-off in 2025.
Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, Sky Mobile and Virgin Mobile use the O2 network.

    4. 1p mobile is good and probably cheaper than Tesco. Another good one is RWG mobile as the credit never expires as long as 1 chargeable call is made every 3 months I think it is from memory. 1p a minute, 1p a txt. It can be topped up in PayPoints and the Post Office.

  3. If you don’t want to upgrade your phone Ilona, you might be able to utilise 2g as it’s not due to be switched off until later on, I believe. It allows phone calls and texts only. It depends if your carrier will still provide it, so you would have to check and maybe switch companies. This article tells you about it: https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-9959/

Might be worth checking out. Hope you have a nice day. Weather looks promising here.

    1. Yes, I think Tesco are jumping the gun a bit and wanting to up their sales. They can wait until I am ready. I will check your link. Thanks.

  4. Why not Google 3G and obtain some information about the shut down? It is all out there. Your phone may still work or it may not. There are still plenty of basic call and text phones out there so get yourself one if you need to when then time comes and just wait and see. If Tesco are your provider for the phone they are doing what they should do, informing you. If you heard nothing from them then you would complain that they had not told you about the 3G shut down. It is as simple as that.

    1. Thank you Rachel. I will look into it a bit more. I think this text is all about selling me a new phone.

    2. Well yes, they run a commercial business but I assume they were also telling you about the 3G changes. Personally if I had a phone just for texts and calls I would just wait and see and do nothing until or unless something happens. As a frugal person who is used to not wasting money I am surprised you make so much fuss about it, all you have to do is ignore.

    3. I am frugal, but not skint. This post is not about saving money, it's about having my freedom of choice being taken away from me. I can afford a fancy iphone or whatever you call them, but I don't want one. I will wait and see what happens next.

  5. I recently got a text as my 20 year old Nokia is 3g and could be soon made redundant. (read somewhere it may still work for calls/text but could be poor). I also constantly get reminders to change to a smart meter.
This push to cashless and apps is heavily promoted as convenience. For example; we get lots of leaflets from fast food places. Just download an app and order a load of greasy carbs that can be delivered straight to the door. On a recent visit to York, I refused to buy from places that didn't accept cash - I'd rather go without. Elaine B.

    1. Follow the ofcom link above and check which network you are with.
2G will be switched off by 2033
All the mobile providers have confirmed to the Government that they do not plan to offer their 2G (and 3G) services beyond 2033.

  6. I couldn't agree with you more. I lost both parents in the last year. What an utter ballache trying to sort everything out: dealing with utility companies, financial institutions etc. Honestly I sometimes feel like a criminal trying to prove who I am. Soo many rules & hoops to jump through.
