Good for you, Kate.

I feel a rant coming on, please excuse me but I have to say it. Look the other way if you don't want to read some gutter press expressions. I've just been on that tacky newspaper web site, you know the one, the Daily Load of Old Twaddle Mail. They cobble together stories about absolutely nothing. Nothing happens so they write a story about it. Yes, I am a jerk for even opening it up, I have a dip in and out of it, look at a few headlines, curse a few times, then move on.

What is the top story this morning? Shock horror, 'The Duchess of Thrift recycles her bargain £160 designer dress for a charity visit in London with her husband William'. You will never guess what she has done, worn the dress for a second time, and they remembered where she had worn it the first time. I mean, gawd, fancy that, I would never have believed that the Duchess couldn't afford to buy a new dress.

Well good on yer Kate, I hope to see you out in it again and again. Fancy picking up on something so trivial. Maybe I ought to give the newspaper a call and let them know I am wearing the same pair of trousers and fleece that I wore yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. Four consecutive days wearing the same clothes, worthy of headline news I would have thought.

I remember the gutter press hounding Princess Diana like that, and look what happened there. It must be awful to be under constant scrutiny, looking in your wardrobe every morning trying to decide what to put on. I bet the Royals don't get much say in it, somebody probably lays their clothes out for them. How awful not to be able to be yourself, not to choose your own style. Princess Diana wore some godawful dresses when she became a part of the establishment. It was only after she broke away from it that she was allowed to blossom as her own person.

Anyway, that's another story and it's in the past, if Kate wants to wear the same clothes several times, let her get on with it. I applaud her. There is too much emphasis on buying new frocks, when there are a lot of perfectly acceptable second hand ones about. And if you have a wardrobe of Royal proportions just keep rotating what you already have. Fashion goes round in circles, as long as it suits, just keep wearing it.

And another thing, while I am in full flow, why don't they ever pick holes in what the blokes are wearing. You never read about a shirt that made it's first appearance in 1992, and emerges from the wardrobe two decades later. You see some right slobbish clothes on the male celebs, nothing is ever said about that.

Leave Kate alone, she is not a clothes horse. The dress is practical on a cold day, she looks warm and comfortable, it suits her, and is right for the occasion. The fact that she wore it once before is totally irrelevant.
Glad I got that off my chest. Toodle pip.

  1. I'm with you a hundred per cent, Ilona. Poor woman. What about when she dared to venture out with a few grey roots? Fancy making a news story out of that! Well it's backfired as people are saying it's refreshing and reassurring that she's 'normal'! Leave her alone, I say! Louise

    1. Just to say I thought this was mean as well. They should leave her alone. Not nice!

  2. I know exactly what you mean! They have nothing better to write! They must sit in their office scratching their heads until someone suggests running a story on Kate wearing a dress for the second time! Until very recently I was still wearing a jumper that I bought when I was 18 (Im now in my 30's) they would of fell off their office chairs with that if I was a royal! haha!

  3. This makes me so angry too. With everything going on in the world, what someone, anyone, is wearing is not front page news. The public is accused of being celebrity crazy, well I'm not, and I'm sick of reading inane c**p about them.

Princess Catherine is a lovely young woman and all power to her for doing things her way. She can wear what she likes, who cares if she's worn it before. The royal family are all critized for how much they cost the country and yet these silly stories crop up all the time. Damned if they do and damned if they don't. I was no fan of Princess Dianna, but she was hounded by the press.

  5. It's all new, this wearing clean stuff everyday. I'm old enough to remember when there were no washing machines and my Mum had to wash everything by hand, she would have had a fit if I'd changed every day.
Same as showering and washing hair, she washed her hair once a week and had a beautiful head of hair till the day she died.

  6. I wear the same jumper for a couple of days, hang it outside or on a hanger inside to air while wearing another jumper for a couple of days, then return to the first jumper worn, And they're usually charity shop or hand me downs, so goodness knows how often they've been recycled!

    That's why I don't buy a newspaper (unless I know there's a £5 voucher off Aldi in it!).

  7. I agree. If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. However, that would mean the Daily Hate would have nothing to write ;)

  8. There is no one more thrifty than the Queen and Princess Anne, they are often seen in the same glad rags and some have been around 20 to 30 years in Annes case. Prince Charles has worn the same top coat a long gingery brown wool affair for as long as I can remember. I am sure Kate will do her own thing, she has not had too many priveledges as she was growing up her parents worked hard to get on in their businesses where as Diana was brought up in a very priveledged home and tried hard to fit into an ordinary everyday lifestyle but unfortunately that was not to be.

  9. I wondered what I had done then lol
I can assure you that this Kate wears things over and over and over, and I never get my photo in the paper!

  10. Wearing an outfit a second time is recycling is it? I wear the same stuff all the time till it wears out, then I replace it from some other charity shop clothing. I must be the best recycler on earth according to that newspaper's standards. Some of my things were brand new (as far as I could tell) and sold in shops for 50 quid or more for one shirt, which I got for maybe 1.

  11. Great post again Ilona, totally agree. And about the men thing too, why is it us women have to have all this age replenishing, revitalift crack filling gunk on our faces to make us beautiful and young again, you never see this stuff being advertised for men, they can look as rough as they like! Needless to say, I don't bother with it, in fact I hate the advertising world and everything it stands for with a vengeance.

  15. Well she's damned if she does and damned she doesn't. If she only wears something once they'd say she was frivolous with money. Poor kid, leave her alone Press and find some real news!

  16. Kate, like most young mothers, is no doubt concentrating her efforts on looking after her family. So who cares if she wears the same thing twice or doesn't dye her hair?
With 2 Princes and future Kings to look after i think she's got one of the most important jobs in the world. And its not that long since little Prince George was born so i say they should be enjoying every minute of family life because it seems to fly by.

  17. If I buy a special dress for a wedding you can be assured I will wear it for every event for about awhile after that and it will definitely make an appearance at my work Christmas party. I will then wear it for the odd wedding or two as well as lending it to my twin sister who will get a wear or two. That's what normal people do, I think.

I do like Catherine Middleton, she just seems so normal and level headed

  19. Hi Ilona, Funny you should mention that because I just finished reading (online) about Kate and her "recycled" (that's what they called it here in the US) dress and they said it was from her "pre-baby days". OMG! Pre-baby days! That had to be at least a year ago! I think these stories are so ridiculous and seem so frivolous compared to what is going on in the world. I feel bad for her but hope she doesn't read any of this cr_p. I hope she's too busy to be bothered.

  20. Not a huge fan of monarchy here if I am honest but like the attitude William and Catherine seem to have to life and family :) - but for heavens sake media - leave the poor woman alone She has a new baby, she re wears dresses - isn't 't there more imprtant stuff to write about? - Typhoons, human disasters, Climate Change, horrible happenings in Syria, Libia etc etc , the Phillipines?

  21. Jumping in here late but you should read what the press has written about our First Lady (Michelle Obama). She regularly re-wears clothes and buys them at normal stores (gasp!). It's rather funny when they post pictures of all the various places she has worn the same dress/outfit. Regardless of what political party one supports, I love the fact that she is behaving as a normal person should. Wear the outfit, wash it and wear it again! She also wears clothes from young/new designers that don't cost an arm and a leg. (How dare she!)

  22. Good post - but to be fair to the gutter press, they do sometimes point out how thrifty HRH Prince Charles is. The gingery coat mentioned belonged to his grandfather, the late King George VI. He died in '52 so that coat must be over 60 years old. I've also seen pics of him wearing a pair of Lobb shoes made in the early 70s which are so worn that they have had little leather patches sewn over the holes in the uppers (all beautifully polished - by a valet, presumably) and a suit that had a patch sewn on one of the pockets. Most of the royal family and aristocracy tend to wear old clothes quite a lot. It's the nouveaux riches- the Beckhams and Paris Hiltons and their ilk - who are the real wasters, IMO. Best wishes, Austin.
