Chop chop

Time for the chop. My hair really irritates me when it's hanging in my face and in my neck. I get to the stage when it has to go. I still don't go to the hairdressers, saving me money, saving me the inconvenience of sitting around in a salon, and ending up with a haircut which I don't like. All I do is hang two mirrors opposite each other on the back doors, angle them so I can see the back of my head, and chop away.

I start at the front with the fringe and sides, then pull up clumps with my left hand and trim with the right hand. Just keep doing that all over. Tidy the bottom up and hope that I've got a straight line across the back of my neck. Usually works out ok.

I've cut most of the red off now, leaving my mousy brown locks with a slight ginger tinge on the ends. Might colour it later, depends if I fancy a change. For now, it's fine, and it feels a lot better.

How are you coping with the heat? I haven't been out again today, far too hot for me. Just started on a new arty project, a lot of buttons to sew onto a piece of fabric. I shall go out and water the pots shortly, and do a two mile walk. The sun is going down.

  1. Job well done. Years ago when I used to go to the hairdressers I was never happy. Tom and I cut each other's hair and have done for years.

  3. You have done a great job there Ilona and saved a few bob too!.Have you seen how much it is to have your hair done in a salon these days. Some people will spend about £50 upwards and think nothing of it.I cut my own hair too,but with it being just long and straight, with a fringe its not hard,lol....You mentioned the weather...well Im not coping at all with it.I went to my Mams house, with my sister this afternoon and we all sat in the garden.I stayed well in the shade but it still made me feel sick and giddy.I just cant cope with it being this hot.Mean while my sister was laid back on a sun lounger, trying to get as brown as possible.I try telling her how dangerous it is..I said its cooking you like a piece of meat in the oven...and she just laughs at me!.All i want is just a nice pleasant day, with a bit of a breeze. On a positive note, the washing is drying well on the line!xx

    1. That doesn't sound too bad. At least you are not paying some ridiculous price that the salons charge.

    2. By the way Ilona (don't publish this if you don't want to) but I am on your side bar as frugal living blog but I am writing here now just about everyday life!

  5. I can't cut my hair, have no coordination with my hands (with mirrors...). but "luckily" my hair doesn't grow. I'm not bald, oh no, but last time I had haircut was 19,5yrs ago and my hair is now shorter! Bad genetics - but I just have to imagine how much money and time I have saved during the years, because I have no idea how much a haircut costs. (and yes, I have been through dozens of blood tests and miracle shampoos and vitamins and other supplements and there is nothing wrong, my hair just doesn't grow).

  6. If I could cut my hair as well as you do I would do it myself too.

    1. Have you tried? Maybe you could make a start with the easy bits at the front and sides, and Tony could finish off at the back.

  7. You've saved a lot by cutting it yourself again Ilona.I'm just trimming mine myself for the last few years too.I did like going to the hairdressers but I can't afford it now- the dogs are priority. My dark brown hair is now grey and if I want to look a bit nicer I put a wig on but most days I put on a clip on fringe and tie my hair back.I have walked the dogs, lovely Lily has lay in a stream and I had to go in too in my trainers after her as she ran off. It's far too hot for me x

  8. When I had very long hair - many years ago(!) - I used to trim it myself using two mirrors. It was very easy then. Now I need to have my hair much shorter and I can't seem to get it straight by myself so I visit the hairdresser every six weeks. It costs £30, which I think is a lot, but I can't ask my OH to do it for me - it would be dreadful!

    1. I agree, £30 is a lot for a haircut. We have walk in salons, no appointment, who charge half that. I still can't bring myself to use them though, hate sitting looking at myself in the mirror.

  10. obviously you save a LOT of money.

However, I have to say, you do a very professional/styled look.
Were you always so good, or has it just sort of evolved?

I have a friend ….Hair bit longer than yours . One day, I thought, gosh, her hair is such a disarray, makes her look awful and oldish. Had been for a week or two. ...I was on the verge of suggesting she treat herself to a hair do/cut/etc.. There is a God. He glued my mouth shut, thankfully. Not a minute later, she was pointing out to me, her "new" hair do/style/cut, her fancy hair dresser had done day before. She was pleased as punch. Of course, if she was pleased (truly?), that is honestly the important thing. However , she did look awful.

    2. My mum cut my hair when I was a child, up until teenage years. My brother and sister had the same treatment. Even with two hairdressers in the family we couldn't afford to get haircuts done professionally, and mum was too proud to ask her in laws.

I started to cut mine when I was in my teens, sometimes visited the hairdressers when I had saved up some money for a trim. I always coloured it myself though, with a box bought from a chemist shop.

I sometimes wore wigs when I dressed up to go out. This was in the sixties and I wanted to change my look without it being permanent.

The times when I did go to the hairdressers I just watched how they did it. It didn't seem too difficult to me, so I copied the technique. Most of the time people don't notice that I have cut my hair, I trim it to keep it tidy, and don't let it get too out of hand. When I start looking like an Afghan Hound that's the time to get the scissors out.

  11. Looks great! I also can't stand my bangs (fringe) getting in my face, but during the colder season I am happy with longer hair. Keeps my head nice and warm!

  12. Great job! I couldn't do it, even getting the mirrors right would challenge me - lol! I like your hair color - looks nice!

  13. I am not good at cutting hair at all. I tried to cut my guy’s hair a few years back and he had to fix it himself using two mirrors. I tried to give my two boys haircuts after They had gotten three really bad haircuts at the barbershop. I got flustered and had my guy finish them. He did a great job and my boys refused to let me cut their hair again. So it became his job to do their haircuts. I can’t blame them as my hubby has been cutting my hair for me since we first started dating. He did a better job cutting my hair than I could remember ever getting at the salon, and it was free. I like not paying salon prices. He cuts my hair ever other month to keep my elbow length hair neatly trimmed. I don’t like my hair on my neck or in my face either. So I have my hubby who loves my hair long, braid it for me. He does French, Dutch, fishtail, side and wraparound braids. I get compliments on my hair and I look good with my hair long, I do not look good with short hair, so I don’t intend to ask my husband to cut it all off. He also does a great job giving haircuts to a couple friends of mine. They like their hair long and trust him to keep their tresses trimmed without losing a lot of length. We were at a barbecue and my best friend had asked hubby to bring his hair shears.so after we ate, he gave her a haircut and a friend of hers that had hair long enough to sit on, asked him to cut her hair for her after she saw him cut my friend’s hair. She doesn’t trust going to the salon and she hadn’t had it cut in over two years. He cut her hair to her hips as she didn’t want to be sitting on it. So I get pretty good service with my free haircuts.

  15. I took your advice Ilona and have been cutting my own hair for quite sometime now. It got too expensive in the end and i am so used to cutting it now i will not be going back to the hairdressers anymore. Also have been recycling clothes making things last longer - your hair looks really nice and neat. Hope you are fine and the sweet fur babies. Love Liz Amy and Benny.xxxx the cats have been looking for cool places to lie in - the long grass in the shade of the garden near the ferns.xxxx

    1. Well done. Even if it's a bit wonky at first, the more you do it the better you become. The way I see it is that I can't see the back of my head, so I don't care if it isn't perfect.
