Here we go again, another check in for the International Walking Group, doesn't seem like five minutes since we did the last one. How have you all been doing? I am pleased to say I have done slightly more than the target, not much mind you, but better than lagging behind then having to catch up later. My total for 10 months is 844 miles. This is mostly made up of two or three miles each day walking locally. You see, a bit every day does mount up.
Sometimes I think I can't be bothered, I am watching the time and thinking shall I shan't I? But then I think what else do I need to do with an hour that can't wait till later or even tomorrow. Walking has to have priority because it benefits my health. I need to do it.
Quite a lot of members are still with us, still plodding away, and that's a good sign. Think how much this is benefitting you, how much better you feel both physically and mentally. Walking gives me thinking time, as well as exercising my joints and muscles. I see people hobbling to the doctors surgery, I don't want that to be me. I want to keep going for as long as I am able to put one foot in front of the other.
You don't need to break records with your walking, don't need to keep up with me or anyone else, all you have to do is some walking, as much as you can manage. It is better if you give yourself a target because that can motivate you to keep going. Seeing the numbers increase daily is a great incentive.
Today is the first day of November, if you are not in the International Walking Group, why not start today. It's a year long challenge, no need to wait till the end of the year, you can do November to November. It's not too late to start making a difference to the rest of your life. Do it now, no excuses.
Your turn, let's have some reports, how are you all doing?

Morning Ilona from a very dreich Scotland! I am very happy to say that despite a lot of extremely soggy weather, I have managed to walk 37.5 miles this month. My total for the year to date is 273.4 miles.
ReplyDeleteHope everyone is still striding forward and experiencing the benefits of getting out & about.. wishing you the best for november's adventures!!
I am managing the huge sum of about twenty five miles a month now. Not great but I am eternally grateful to be able to walk at all now
ReplyDeleteHello Ilona, just a quick check-in today: walked 108 kilometers, total so far 981 kilometers!
ReplyDeleteAnd did 76 kilometers cycling in October.
Love and greetings from beautifully autumnal Dokkum in the Netherlands to you and all my fellow walkers,
Jeanneke.
Thank you for the motivation to get out there and walk! Starting today with 2 miles!
ReplyDeletewoohoo! welcome to our group!
DeleteThank you, Gillian!
DeleteIlona, You're the best!!! I was just reading your post--reflecting on the h@!l of year I've had and my desire to get on track caring for myself again. Your words--why not start now--Ilona, you're a mind-reader and a wonder! A true leader!!! Love you sista! My two days of walking this week are the warm up for great things to come from this day forward!!! Tally-ho everyone. Let's get crackin'! If we don't care for ourselves, who will? Best to you, Ilona!!
ReplyDeletewelcome to our group!
DeleteI'm sorry but I can't give the amount of miles I've walked, but it's an hour or more fast for me walking each day-Plus for one of the weeks this month whilst on holiday-about 3 hours a day.I really have to push myself on the way back to the car but enjoy it.I have had muddy boots, coat and jeans muddy hands and face(bouncy dogs).Calling into the shops on the way home I seem to be the scruffiest, dirtiest person there x
ReplyDeleteI definitely felt like I was plodding this past month. Not as many as I would have liked but still 132 miles, so total of 1,220 for the year so far. I might still be able to make my 1,500 goal but will have to find some renewed vigour, especially with the holidays coming up when there tends to be a bit more laying around. Anyways, you are always an inspiration Ilona - just reading your post today is an encouragement to keep going! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteDid 67 miles this month and lots of digging on allotment. Brings total to 939 - whoopee. I was doing so few a couple of years ago and now really walking briskly and upright, keep going everyone. Really good for you.
ReplyDeleteHello Ilona and the walking group, hope everyone is ok.My tally was 89 miles in october bringing my total to 847. The rain has been putting me off but still wanted to do some miles,if i stop exercising i will just naff up.lol.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona and the group,
ReplyDeleteI managed 98 miles in October which takes my total for the year so far to 897. I agree with you Ilona...it's great to have a target for motivation. Even though I love my walks once I'm out I still try and talk myself out of going sometimes.

Good a Evening Ilona,
ReplyDeleteJenette here-I’m sorry but my comments don’t work on your blog so could you post my miles please? I’ve only managed 53.7 this month but have a total to date of 891.2 so I’m still on target for the end of the year hopefully.
Best wishes,
Jenette
94 this month making 950 in total. I would like to do 1200 by the end of the year. 250 miles to go! Think I've slipped back a bit.
ReplyDeleteGood day Ilona,
ReplyDeleteHappy November 1st! Thank you again for having the idea of this walking group and keeping the project going with your walking and positive comments. Here in sunny Arizona, the weather is finally lovely, autumn has arrived and the temperatures are grand. I expect to walk more now. In October, I walked 54 miles for a year to date total of 691.
Hello to all the other walking group members..and for those reading that haven’t yet joined our little group, start tomorrow with a walk around the block! It doesn’t have to a long walk, the trick is to put your shoes on and get out the door before you talk yourself out of it ;)
Hilogene in Az.
Still on track to finish the 1000 in November so that anything else is a bonus! 109 for October and just over 971 for the year so far. Need the weather to play ball now but looking at the wet forecast for the week, not sure that will happen. Thanks for keeping us all motivated, Ilona. Vicki

ReplyDeleteHello, It’s Sonja from North Carolina reporting miles for September and October. I had no internet to post September miles in early October so decided to wait & post in November. September miles were 125 miles and October miles were 115. Our very nice weather has provided a backdrop for some very nice walks. Looks like others are also enjoying autumnal weather. Thx to Ilona for hosting and providing motivation for us!
Hi Ilona and all the lovely walking group.Fairly cool autumn weather here, good for walking.124 miles!
ReplyDeleteLife has thrown me a couple of curve balls since early sept ,but trying to get out everyday for a walk, no matter what distance, so have only clocked up 212 miles for Aug Sept Oct, totalling 708 miles (I think haha). Never mind, just getting out for awhile helps.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona (Marlene from Everday Life) yes another blog I know.
ReplyDeleteHow do you track the miles is it via map/google or do you have a tracker thingie?
Hello Marlene. I only count the miles when I go out for a walk, I don't count them when I do everyday tasks, shopping in town, supermarket, dog walking, visiting friends. Some do but I don't.
DeleteI have a 2 and a 3 mile walk around my village, checked on bikehike.co.uk. but this isn't working for me at the moment, maybe fault at my end, I don't know. I walk exactly the same route almost every day so I know how far. If I go further afield I take an OS map and use a marker to highlight the paths I have walk, then check that when I am back, on the computer. May have to look for another web site now to do that.
I don't have a tracker thingy. As far as I know a phone with a GPS app is the only reliable indication of how far you have walked. I don't have a phone like that. There are thingy's that record how many steps, but these don't accurately transfer steps to miles. If anyone uses one of these it helps with motivation as a record to compare daily, weekly and monthly distances.
It's up to the individual how they do it. Any form of checking distances is acceptable, as long as it gives an incentive to carry on. Some people set out to track their walks with enthusiasm, but fall by the wayside when the gadget is no longer a novelty. How you do it is up to you. I can't check if the correct mileage is being reported, if someone adds a few extra miles on they are only cheating themselves.
As an indication, someone walking briskly for 20 minutes without stopping has covered a mile. Most people walk briskly at 3mph.
What is the definition of a walk? I do it for exercise so I walk as fast as I can. I prefer to do it later when there aren't many people about because there is always someone who wants to stop for a chat. If someone has limited mobility they won't be able to walk so fast, so they should do whatever they can. There are no hard and fast rules, one size doesn't fit all.
PS. I don't count parts of a mile. If it is under half a mile I round it down, if it's over I round it up. It evens itself out over a year.
DeleteWell done everyone, I have read all your comments.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for the reply Ilona I don't think I will bother buying any sort of tracker. I will use your indication of walking briskly for 20 mins, thankyou.
Deletemy total this month is 106, on account of having a new job in a rural setting that requires a lot of walking in the countryside. That brings the year so far to 803.5 so very good going for me.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona, i'm on 950 miles as of 1st November. Some days i've been trying to get 5 miles in as that is my main target. This week will be mostly zilch as i'm full of cold, love hearing how you're doing! Take care from Lesley's daughter Jennifer X
ReplyDeleteI am very late because I spent two weeks in lovely Budapest with my son´s family and then simply forgot to check in my miles when I was back. My miles for October were 83, bringing me up to 852 in total.

I want to do this next year, but have had problems with mileage trackers. What kind do you use?
