Hello. As you can see, the gilet is finished. What a strange word gilet is. They used to be called body warmers, or vests. It's a French word for waistcoat, or a sleeveless jacket. It may be waist- to knee-length and is typically straight-sided rather than fitted; however, historically, gilets were fitted and embroidered. In 19th-century dressmaking a gilet was a dress bodice shaped like a man's waistcoat.
I started at the bottom. Keep adding pieces, any shape any colours any patterns. Turn under a hem all the way around so there are no raw edges.
No fancy stitching, just running stitch, anyone can do it. I used any colour of thread, split six strands into three.
I decided to use one big piece of fabric for the back. Then outline the design with running stitches to hold the layers of fabric together.
I try it on. All that stitching has made it slightly smaller than the original, but it still fits me.
I went to the Arts Centre to show Nicky, but she wasn't there. She has gone away for an Easter break. I'll catch up with her when she comes back.
While I was out and about I went to Sainsburys to buy a few things that I can't get at Aldi. Organic butter beans which go well in an omelette because they have soft skins and are easy to chew. Garlic granules in bigger plastic jars. I wanted frozen baby broad beans but they didn't have any. The bigger ones have hard skins. I had some baby ones before and they are really nice. I bought a tin of broad beans to try. I don't normally buy tinned veg. Toasted sesame seed oil, Aldi doesn't sell it. Danish blue cheese. I put it in a stir fry or a pan of soup. I bought Starbucks Caramel Latte sachets. I usually buy Nescafe but Starbucks is better.
I'm still thinking about where I might go this weekend, but it will have to be where there aren't lots of people. The traffic reports are saying many main routes are busy with lots of delays.
Whatever you are doing make sure you have a good time. We'll catch up soon. Toodle pip. ilona
Hi Ilona, instead of baby broad beans you might like to try frozen edamame beans as they have no outer skin, they are sometimes available in Lidl or Aldi but most of the bigger supermarkets have them. Love the gilet update, nice and colourful and it will be a pleasure to wear. Jan in Castle Gresley
ReplyDeleteThanks. I will look for those in Aldi.
DeleteI do a main shop once a week in Aldi ,but I also have to go to Waitrose for some of the " finer" things that Aldi doesn't stock. Wish I didn't have to as Waitrose is falling apart at the seams.....potholes big enough to lose a small child in the car park, only one lift ever working, self checkouts broken.....etc etc, though the staff are all delightful!.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a Waitrose anywhere near me. Have to cross the bridge for that. £3 there and back. I like the smaller Aldi we have here. Less choice means that you don't waste hours perusing all the stock that you don't want. I fell out with Sainsburys once because they closed all the manned checkouts at 6pm. Pleased to see now that they have left some open for longer.
DeleteLove the vest Ilona you are so good at perserving getting things finished blessings Marie in Australia
ReplyDeleteI start with an idea of what I hope to achieve, then make changes as I go along. I am looking for creativity every step of the way.
DeleteCompletely inspirational. I'm not surprised that it took you many weeks. Arilx
ReplyDeleteI get bored when a task becomes repetitive, and have to force myself to carry on. When the end is in sight I am keen to see how it will turn out.
DeleteThe gilet turned fantastic!! I love all the colors. Our family dinner went well. Planning for a nice quiet weekend doing this and that around the house. Suppose to be nice and sunny. Time to get the flower pots out and scrubbed up ready for some flowers soon.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend.
That is very funky!
ReplyDeleteI am a funky gal. Ha ha.
DeleteThe gilet is an absolutely stunning work of art. I hope you enjoy wearing it because I know I definitely would. Looking forward to seeing your next project.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I think I will wear it when I next go shopping.
