A new jacket, and a confirmation

Hello. A small lamp came home with me a few months back, found at a car boot sale for 20p. There was a box of oddments on the floor so I had a rummage through it. It now has a new look, it was cream coloured pottery, and now has a multicoloured woolly jacket. I started at the bottom with a crotchet circle, then kept going round and round, increasing the chains around the widest part, and decreasing as it got narrower towards the top. The electric flex has an on/off switch half way along it so I had to put the jacket on and work round the flex. Without a switch, I could have just taken the plug off and pushed it through before it got too narrow.
Now it has a pretty base. I have a shade but it is very old and doesn't go with it. I can either strip the fabric off and recover it, or look for another one in a charity shop.

A letter arrived today, confirming that I don't need a TV licence. They contact me every two years and each time I say, still the same, with the addition that I do not watch BBC iplayer. Anyone who is giving up watching TV and tells the licensing people for the first time, will get more letters asking if they are watching. They don't give in easily and will pester for several months. I don't get any bother now.

Hey, it's the weekend and the sun is out. Time to get off the computer and go out. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

  2. I crochet too Ilona and love your idea of restyling something old into something new just with a bit if yarn. The random colourway in the yarn makes for an interesting finish. Shade wise I think I would go for a plain blue or green. Rae x

  3. Those bright colors look like you.
They seem to show up in a lot of your projects.
    Very cheerful!
I get a new notice trying to get me to buy tv service every week.
I still refuse, it has been since 1996 for me,
no way do I want to go back now.
Hope you have a great day.

  4. Ilona, that lamp looks great. I bet a shade would look good if you picked one bright colour and found a 'matchpot' in a similar shade.. actually when I think about it one of the paint companies used to offer up to three free samples. Might be worth googling. I would give up the TV in a blink and not miss it at all. Tony on the other hand wouldn't know how to fill the evening if he didn't have the TV to watch.

  7. Love the wool colours. I think the shade would look good in one colour, any of the ones in the wool. I favour the red or shocking pink. If you want to play safe, then white, and if you want to go really wild, bright canary yellow. Jean.

  8. Wait a minute... you have to PAY in order to watch TV?!?

I'm sure I'm not the only American who thinks this is whacky.

    1. Yes, Cindy. We need to buy an annual licence to watch television. It's about £145 at the moment, I believe there will be an increase soon.

yes not only do we pay for BBC only, not the commercial channels which are self funded, but in the past people have been sent to prison for not paying for their licence, especially poor women.Although I do have a tv now, I didn't have one for several years with a young child as I didn't find it useful at all. I was harassed by tv people threatening to come back with a warrant to search my house and 'turn it upside down'. Nice way to treat poor young parents, and all for the BBC whether you watch that channel or not.

  9. Blooming brilliant crochet cover, who would think of that, only you.
Great about the tv licence, we used to get bullied by the tv people when we didn't have a tv, they couldn't believe that anyone these days didn't have one. lol
We don't have to bother any more as over 70's get the licence free. whoopeeee

    1. Hi Bri. It's over 75's that get a free licence, not 70.

  11. Just watched the George Clarke special about the caravan designed by a POW in a Japanese camp during WWII. I was delighted that they were able to build the caravan from his designs - amazing how accurate the designs were. I noticed that George was shedding a few tears when looking at the completed caravan and I joined him!! Well done Will and George. You are so clever making amazing new things from old and I love the crocheted cover. Audrey from New Zealand

    1. Hi Jane. I assume you mean the West Highland Way in Scotland. I did a small section of it when I was up there a few years back. Can't tell you any more than that.

  13. Lovely lamp!

Oh yes, the TV license people are very keen on harassing people, it's not right, if people don't want to use their service they shouldn't have the right to pester them about it!
