Bad habits

I did something today which is totally out of character, I bought something off the internet. You know me, I don't do that. I prefer to pay cash and don't trust putting my card details into a web site, however much they say it's safe. But today I did just that. It was far easier than driving to the camera shop in Lincoln to buy a memory card reader.

For some reason the one I have been using for several years has stopped working. It will not transfer the photo's from the canon camera to the computer. I have got round the problem by taking the card out and inserting it into the Fujifilm camera then connecting a lead from that to the computer. That has been working but it's a faff.

I rang the shop to ask if I could deal directly with them and they could take payment over the phone. They said no, they can't do that. The nice young man looked in his catalogue and sent me an email with a link for the item I need. The shop is part of a large company. It was £20 including postage, so not a great amount. It should arrive on Monday.

I won't be making a habit of this, won't get sucked into the dangerous world of internet shopping. I can see how easily it would be to fall for the convenience of shopping from your computer. I shall have some sleepless nights now thinking about someone hacking into mine or their computer, stealing my card details.

It's been raining most of the day, There was a window of about one hour when it stopped so I grabbed the chance of taking Billy for a walk. It's been a day of sewing and watching videos.

I rang a firm about the removal of my garage. They don't do a whole package supplying  men to do do the job, and disposal of the garage. I have to arrange the men and they will accept the asbestos, double wrapped. It can be delivered to them or they will provide a skip. I will make some enquiries.

Have a great weekend. We'll catch up soon. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. If you use your credit car, I believe you are fully protected against fraud. During Lockdown I had no option but to make internet purchases and touch wood, have been OK reference payments.

  2. I have one credit card with a low level of money on it that I only use for online and postal purchases.I feel a bit safer that way. However I have to say since I have been doing weekly grocery shops online & buying far more when we could not go out on line, I have had to have 2 new cards. 🥲😮Each time the bank has identified the problem before me, - once for train tickets from Birmingham (250£+) and the second time £400 for computer parts! Definitely not mem caused a hassle but I did not panic as much as if it was our mai. Credit card. If the money went we would definitely miss it and be annoyed but the limit is such that we could carry it if the money was lost. Just check that the bank doesn’t keep upping the credit limit. 😊👍

    1. I only have one credit and one debit card, and don't want to have to get new ones. And don't want the hassle of sorting problems out.

  3. I do purchase items online, but never let them save my card details. I use my credit card, which has a deliberately set, fairly low limit so that a thief wouldn't be able to take very much really. As Bovey Belle says, protection is in place against fraud, but it is the stress involved if a large amount went missing.

  4. Agree 100% with commenter, you are protected if you use your credit card. Twice I had my card info used by criminals, the credit card company immediately erased the charges and issued me a new card. No need to lose sleep. However, this is not true of debit cards! So only use credit cards if you are worried about evil doers. Hilogene in Az.

  5. i dont know how it works over there, here if someone gets ur card details and purchases something that does not look right, big brother is watching, the card gets blocked and we get a ph call and then any money out of the bank account is payed back by the bank, which happened to my relative recently,he use to work for a bank and was unfazed by it and dose everything online all shopping, the card was used for $50 worth of takeaway food and then blocked by big brother lol when they tryed to buy goodies worth $600 and then $300 both times blocked, and recieved a ph call.Im curious if that happens there.

    1. I think something similar happens here. I hardly ever use a card now. The camera purchase went through ok, which was something out of the ordinary, it wasn't queried.

  6. I don't do internet shopping either, or hardly ever, but it is rapidly getting to the point here where the shops I use are closing down one by one and I am at a loss as to where I will be able to shop except on line.

  7. Another part of the big plan is to make us use the card instead of cash, shortly we will only be able to purchase with cards and I hate them.

    1. I keep trying to warn people about this, but the response is usually that 'It is so much easier just to use a card and they wouldn't do away with cash because there would be an outcry from the public'. Somehow, I don't think an outcry from the public would stop them.

  8. I love internet shopping. It's a lifesaver, especially in emergencies. Also, I love Kindle. I can buy a book and begin reading immediately. There's good and bad either way. I still enjoy browsing in charity shops as I rarely buy new clothes.
