Not fair.

I've been to Carbis Bay, I was there two years ago for my 70th birthday. It's a lovely place, nice beach, pretty houses, good walks, and a very swish hotel.

Preparations have been taking place over the last few weeks to welcome leaders from all around the world for the G7 Summit. It is reported that the cost of policing this jolly will be in excess of £70 million.
Around 6,500 police will secure the event on the 11th to the 13th of June, with more than 5,000 of those coming from other parts of the country. Ten feet high fences have been put up. Roads will be closed and security checkpoints will be set up
Devon and Cornwall police have designated four protest sites, with no relevance to the G7. Truro and Falmouth being two sites which are miles away. Resist G7 have said they will boycott these sites. Read this article for more details
So, leaders and politicians can come here and cause all this disruption and cost, when it could all be done over the internet with zoom meetings. Will they be quarantining when they arrive, like other people have to when returning from holiday? Will they be wearing masks indoors and will they be social distancing? Will they all have a travel passport documenting their health status? Will they all be jabbed and have proof of Covid tests? Or will these privileged people be waved through.
Someone I know has just been here to visit his mother, it was her 80th birthday, a special occasion. He drove from Germany, he had to jump through hoops to get the correct documentation, at an enormous cost to himself. It wasn't easy.
For the last eighteen months or so it has been illegal for us little people to meet their families, and in groups. The police have been out in the parks and in the streets hounding anyone who who appears to be breaking those rules. Now we are spending mega bucks on bringing in complete strangers into our country. The, one rule for us and one rule for them, is not fair.
They are coming here to discuss and decide our future, yet we are not allowed to have similar gatherings. There has been a block on weddings, funerals, and church services.
There are reports that the virus will flare up again. New variants will appear. The Government are scratching their heads wondering what to do next. I have one suggestion. Scrap the G7 Summit and put all the money into improving hospitals.
It's Saturday, enjoy the weekend. Thanks for popping in. ilona

  1. It's not just the money . The hotel owners have cut down trees and cleared land without planning permission . They then constructed cabins and applied for retrospective planning permission, and it was granted! They have kept the coast path, but only just.

    1. That makes it even worse. I am sad to hear that they have destroyed the natural environment as well. Totally opposite of their so called 'Build Back Better' campaign. Makes the Green Movement a total farce

  2. Network Rail have destroyed all the trees by the side of the railway line in Kettering where I live . Electrification. We halve been kept awake for months whilst these old trees have been got rid of during the night with chain saws. Nothing left. The poor birds and animals suffer yet again

  4. To be fair Zoom doesn't really replace all in person meetings. Have you been on a Zoom meeting with more than 4 people trying to discuss something. It's dreadful. Everyone talks over each. I think it must be because body language is difficult to read.

I have had several training sessions on Zoom and Teams and it works great for that. Most people are video and mic off and just watching the trainer/presentation with opportunity to ask questions at the end but that's not what the summit is for. It's for discussions.

We host once every 7 years, every country does, and policing costs look similar to the previous two. I think it's important for the world's richest, most powerful countries to discuss and agree important issues such as climate change. Whether I agree with the conclusions they draw is another matter entirely and I support people's right to lobby or protest the G7 for what they believe are the solutions to world problems.

  5. I totally agree with your common sense approach to this wasteful meeting. Isn't it sad the double standards that exist?!

  6. I hope your country opens up soon. I would appreciate the fact that masks really do not help slow down the disease at all. No jab for me. It is our responsibility to take care of self. Governor in Oregon knows the masks do not work but expects people with no jab will have to wear masks anyway. Some places even if you are jabbed. They are trying to take over our lives. Hopefully the world leaders will understand to take care is to open communities and live as normal. Stay clean at home and while out and about. Ilona, you are the same age as my older brother. Have a happy , healthy life, my blogger friend!
