Joe Public

There seems to be more and more adverts popping up everywhere at the moment. twiiiiittering, inyourfacebook, and yoootooob are awash with them. Mostly I ignore them, sometimes I am nosey and have a look. They are usually advertising something that you never realised you needed, but they shove it in your face in the hope that you fall for their spin. This is one such item. I never knew I needed a mosquito catcher.

There is a promotional video to view. Mozzies fly into it, and you unscrew the bottom and tip out a ton of little dead bodies. If you want to know if something works or not, best to read the comments from Joe Public, following the advert. I found hundreds saying no it does not work. A lot of people said it is cruel, and many more said insects are the food for birds, so you kill them as well. Cost of this is £21.76 for a small one, and £25.39 for the large one.
There was another advert a while back offering adjustable specs. Twiddle a knob on the side to alter the tilt of the lens. Can be adjusted for near or long sight. I know someone who bought these, they said they are rubbish. It took them ages to get their money back.
So beware. read up what other people are saying about the product that you are considering throwing your money at. Take no notice of the paid reviews that appear from influencers. Listen to Joe Public.
The man came yesterday from Leeds to assess the work needed to remove the garage, and I have received the written quotation. Before he arrived I rang up two other companies for estimates. It's a pretty bog standard job, they must have removed quite a lot of similar structures. Years ago a lot of outhouses etc were constructed of asbestos. Anyway, The quote from Leeds was in between the other two prices. One was too cheap, the other too expensive, so I am going with the Leeds firm.
He explained how it would be done. No need to break up the panels, they will saw through the wooden frame and lift each section out intact. The whole site has to be sprayed first to minimise dust. Now I need to shift things out of the way all around it and make a clear path from the road up the driveway. Waiting for a start date.
Thanks to the Walking Group members for checking in yesterday. There is still time if you haven't done so. I am impressed with the effort everyone is putting into it.
Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon. Toodle pip.   ilona

    1. Online adverts are all to do with encouraging people to stay at home. No need to go to the shops, everything can be delivered. It's a way to control what you spend and where you spend it. All electronic payments which can be tracked.

  2. I bought a device to stop dogs barking from FB and it was total rubbish. My dog couldn't hear it and neither could I.
I've also bought a hanger for the wardrobe where you put 6 hangers on a rack and then drop one end so it lays flat and frees up space. Saw it on a FB ad but bought from an auction site at a quater of the price. It's very good and works well.
I think like you ie read the reviews first. There are so many adverts now and most of it is rubbish. x

    1. I suppose there is the odd useful thing that might appear in adverts, but most of it is junk. I have just seen one for a freestanding full length mirror, now marketed as an exercise aid. You stand in front of it and do yoga or whatever, and look at yourself. Who's have thought of that, only the company that wants to sell them.

  3. When you use the internet search engines they use algorithms to ensure you get targeted adverts. No idea what made you get a mosquitoe trap, have you searched for anything to do with insect bites?

I know you have written in the past about online shopping but our online search history coupled with our ip address gives an awful lot of information

    1. I know about targeted ads, I get them for asbestos removal now. There are also random ads sent out to everyone. No I didn't look for bug/insect traps.

  4. Did you use the garage for your car at all or was it always useless space?

    1. I had a smaller car when I moved here, so yes, I did put it in the garage. After that my next cars were always bigger, there is a width restriction to my driveway, due to the different levels between mine and my neighbours. The the cars were too wide then so it was used for storage for all the timber I collected.
