More bullshit. They are on a mission to push out smart meters for gas and electricity. Here you go, the latest news. Huge smart meter change could see gas and electricity bills slashed for home owners. Changes are set to come into play by regulators Ofgem, which may in turn result in energy bills dropping. Automatic updates will be sent regarding energy usage every half hour from next month. The change will allow suppliers to introduce more time of use tariffs. Busy times will be more expensive, quieter times will be cheaper.
So, are you going to organise your day depending on when is the lowest cost to do your washing and cook a meal? Will you be up all night doing the hoovering and baking cakes? Then go to bed in the morning up until midday? Recording everything you want to watch on the tele so you watch at the cheapest times?
Little bits of our lives are being taken over by Big Tech, and people are happy to let it happen. If you haven't got a smart meter don't fall for the bullshit. It isn't there to help you save money, it is to control you. Can you see the pattern now.

DeleteI will not have a smart meter because of the ability of utility firms to charge for fuel at different rates depending on the time of day. I do believe washing machines and dryers should not be used unattended whether by night or day as there have been so many fires caused by these machines.
ReplyDeleteI would never set any appliances to come on overnight. I don't use timers for anything. The only thing running 24/7 is the fridge freezer.
DeleteI won't have a smart meter, we live in a medium-sized bungalow and there is no room to allow a safe distance from the meter. It would have to be placed in the hall between the bedroom and the living room and we would be continuously blasted by the radiation from it. You can buy covers for some models which act as a cage to contain the radiation but they wouldn't fit the meter which would be fitted in our home. If the time comes when smart meters are compulsory we'll have have to look into making a cover ourselves,or finding someone who can make one for us. but until then we definitely won't be getting one. We have two cats to think about as well as ourselves and their little bodies would even more susceptible to damage from EMR's.

DeleteAlso, and this might sound a little far fetched, but with the whole digital id and if we get to the point of a Chinese style social credits system, I'm sure access to heat / light could be removed as a punishment if you aren't behaving as society deems fit. If you see what I mean... I am working towards moving to solar panels feeding into a battery and get off the system as I don't want to be at the mercy of fluctuating energy prices.
DeleteIsn't that similar to Economy 7? I don't really know, just what I think I've heard somewhere. There must be plans which have cheaper tariffs because I know people who already set their washing machine to come on throughout the night.
ReplyDeleteDuring the off-peak Economy 7 times, electricity is much cheaper than standard electricity rates. However, during peak hours the rates are more expensive. To make the most of Economy 7, it helps if appliances like your dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer have a timer so that you can run them overnight during the cheaper Economy 7 times.
DeleteYou can get a smart meter if you’re on an Economy 7 tariff, but not all suppliers can offer this. The ease with which you can do so will depend on the supplier you’re with. You might find your options limited.

Smart meters are here in Canada and have been for some time.
ReplyDeleteWe have three price tiers during a 24 hour period on weekdays.
7 p.m. to 7 a.m. off peak, the cheapest.
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. mid peak, the mid priced.
7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on peak, the most expensive.
Weekends and holidays is 24 hours off peak, the cheapest.
Yes, I do my laundry and most of my baking on the weekends, the evenings when we watch TV is during the off peak hours.
What I have quoted above are Summer hours -- May 1st to October 31st. however, the electricity company get you coming and going, because when there is less daylight in the Winter months they change the hours to suit them as they know people use more power at that time. Crafty buggers.
That sounds like a nightmare. Organising your activities around the price of electricity. That's how they control you.

DeleteI had smart meters installed a couple of years ago. They were fitted to the existing meter positions inside the meter cupboard inside my porch. I was given something called an in-house reader that can be plugged in anywhere to use if I wanted to view my energy usage but I don't bother with that. I think some of your readers are confusing the two. Having smart meters takes away the need to supply readings myself. If this eventually means energy can be supplied cheaper at off peak times then I am all for it. Kathryn

Deleteif you were on a pre payment meter you had no choice but to have a smart meter fitted with British Gas it was the only way you could pay for it . we are 5 unwalkable miles from the nearest functioning post office the nearer one doesnt deal with anything very complicated doesnt accept parcels etc etc , finally the winter fuel payment has turned up now i just have to find a post office that will accept it ....i hate being poor
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a pre payment meter in any of my houses, always had quarterly bills. I can't remember what happened when I lived in flats. When we were kids mum had to put coins in a slot meter. She made sure she had enough by getting a couple of bags from the Post Office.
DeleteI read my meters once a week and send in readings once a quarter. I don't find it difficult. I know what I'm using and don't need their gadget in my house.

DeleteI never put on washing and go out or go to bed. My neighbour put on a load of washing, went in town shopping, and came home to a flooded kitchen. The hose had come apart while she was out. Tumble dryers can, and have, caught fire so I'm always awake and home when I use mine.

You have discovered the whole point of smart meters. They are able to alter your daily pattern by throwing you a carrot of cheaper electricity. If you have made the changes to suit yourself all well and good. You can play the system to your advantage.
